Our Soothing Sedation Options

Nitrous Oxide

Commonly referred to as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a light form of sedation. Gas inhaled through a lightweight mask helps you mellow out during treatment. We can easily adjust the levels of gas that you inhale throughout the procedure based on your needs. Nitrous oxide wears off within a few minutes without lasting effects, so you’ll be able to drive yourself home.

Oral Sedation

Medication such as Halcion, lorazepam, or diazepam are taken orally, typically one hour before your visit. Oral sedation provides a deep sense of relaxation. While your memory of the procedure can be foggy and motor skills may be impaired, you’ll remain conscious. Due to the effects of oral sedation, someone must drive you home. The effects of the medication typically wear off within 24 hours.

IV Sedation

Administered intravenously, this type of sedation puts you in a sleep-like state, although you typically remain awake during the procedure. IV sedation in Chicago, IL enables you to experience any type of complex oral surgery without feeling anxious. Our board-certified anesthesiologists carefully monitor you during treatment and afterwards to ensure the anesthesia wears off as it should. You’ll need to have someone drive you home and may feel slightly sluggish for the remainder of the day.

General Anesthesia

During deep sedation or general anesthesia, you’re completely unconscious during the procedure. When under general anesthesia, you can’t be easily awakened until the effects wear off or are reversed with medication. We usually only recommend this type of sedation for significant oral surgery or if you’re resistant to other forms of sedation. While under anesthesia, our board-certified anesthesiologist will monitor all your vital signs including blood pressure, heart rate, and pulse.
